RENAISSANCE-SCHLOSS ROSENBURG

The Rosenburg, located in the Waldviertel and built in the 12th century, is amongst Austria’s most beautiful Renaissance castles.

The castle was constructed in the 12th century in a strategically advantageous position.  During the Middle Ages, the Waldviertel was still a part of the “Great North Forest”, occupying an important location on the most significant transit artery given to us by nature herself - the Danube River.

Around 1,000 years ago, under the leadership of the Margraves of Babenberg, settlement began of this inaccessible region.  The existence of the Rosenburg in the Waldviertel is first documented in 1175. Its owner was one Godezwin de Rosenberc, from whom the castle acquired its name.  In the 16th century, the Rosenburg was remodelled into a magnificent Renaissance castle, one which has been in the possession of the Hoyos Family since 1681.

It is not only the Rosenburg’s exterior that impresses – in its interior, visitors can view valuable furniture, pictures and objets d’art. A visit to the marble hall, the library and the castle chapel conveys to children and their parents a flavor of the earlier significance of Rosenburg Castle.

A unique experience is also in store for parents and children at the twice-daily falconry demonstrations given by the Rosenburg’s “Renaissance Falconers”, held at 11 and 3 o’clock.
